Is 1 John 1:9 our daily bar of soap?
If you read or take a text out of context then then all you have left is a Con .. Context is Key 🔑.
There have been many scriptures throughout church history that have been taken way out of context in order to reinforce a wrong bs or belief system.. often times it had to do with religious control..
1 John 1:9 is one of those isolated scriptures that has been read out of context in order to reinforce a wrong belief system for control..
The belief is that yes Jesus died for my sins and I am forgiven of my past sins, but in order to be forgiven of any present or future sins I must first remember my sin and confess my sin and only then will I be forgiven of sin.
Worst yet is the belief that I must first go to a priest for confessional in order to be forgiven .. yikes !!!
So under this belief , forgiveness of sins is not just based on the one time sacrifice and blood of Jesus, but its now based upon my ability to remember every sin and then confess every sin before I am then forgiven of sin.
So what happens if I miss one ??? Am I then not forgiven or righteous???
And is this what 1 John 1:9 was really talking about ?
Lets look at it.. in the good ole King Jimmy Version
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. 1 John 1:8-10
First of all John was addressing a group of people who claimed they had never sinned .. These people denied the very existence of sin..
We all know that sin and sins are very real.. The Bible says that all have sinned ! Romans 3:23
And that Jesus died to pay the the price for our sins and to take away the sin of the world..
We actually read all about this in the very next chapter of 1 John
He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins-and not only our sins but the sins of all the world.
1 John 2:2
So In verse 8 when it says ...
if we say we have no sin the word no actually means NEVER!
In other words.. If we say that we have never sinned we make God a liar ..
who has already declared all have sinned .
So this is the deal ..
Once we understand that we have all sinned and we understand our need for Christ and we receive Him ..as the one who has already paid the price for all sin . We are forgiven once and for all..
Once we confess ..... which confess doesn’t mean to continually repeat over and over, but really means to agree with God about our sinful state and our need for Jesus, then He is faithful and just to forgive us of all sin and to cleanse us from all
Remember Psalm 103 ??
Bless the LORD, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits:
Who forgives all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases, Psalm 103:1-3
So are you saying that we are now free to sin without any consequences??
Absolutely not !!
Sin is not your friend! Sin will still hurt you!
If you put your hand in a fire , the fire will burn you! The fire does not care if you’re forgiven or not!!
So should I feel sorry about sinning ?
If your born again you should feel very bad about sinning because sin is no longer your nature ..
Your dead to sin Romans 6:6
and sinning also grieves the Holy Spirit.. Eph 4:30
So What I am saying is this .. that 1 John 1:9 has often been taken way out of context giving the Christian the impression that they are not forgiven until they remember their sin and beg God to forgive them of their sin.. not true !!
Your not being forgiven, you are forgiven!!
God says .. Your sins and iniquities I will remember no more.. so dont you think that we should agree with God about our sins ?? And Remember them
No more ?
He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. Psalm 103:12
