An evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign?

Why did Jesus say an evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign?

Was Jesus telling us that we  as believers should never seek to see signs and wonders working through our lives ? absolutely not!

That would be contrary to  scripture and  to what we as believers  are actually called to walk in .

And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;

they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them;

they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover." Mark 16:17-18

Who will lay hands on the sick and see them recover?  The every day believer !

If you believe in Jesus and are born of God, then you are qualified to see the power of God demonstrated through your life!

The same power that raised Christ from the dead lives in you ! Romans 8:11

Jesus said the works  that I do you will do and even greater works will you do! John 14:12

So what about ..

The scripture that says an evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign?

What was Jesus  really saying?

Well first like so many other scriptures this one has often been taken way out of context to deny the very power of God that God still desires to manifest through the church today.

In order to understand what Jesus  was saying,  we need to first understand who Jesus was speaking too.

He was speaking to the religious Pharisees of that day  who demanded that Jesus show them a sign to prove that He was who he said he was ..

Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him, Teacher, we desire to see a sign or miracle from You [proving that You are what You claim to be]. Matthew 12:38

The Pharisees wanted Jesus to perform a sign for them to prove who He was ..

In other words they were acting on the same level as the devil ..

Remember what the devil said to Jesus in the wilderness?

Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread." Matthew 4:3

The devil wanted Jesus to prove who He was by doing a magic trick !

The Pharisees were also trying to tempt Jesus to do something to prove who He was !

But Jesus did not have to do anything to prove who He was. Jesus already knew who He was.

This is why Jesus said an evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign..

But, Jesus was in no way was  saying that  it was wrong as a believer in Christ to desire to walk in the gifts of the spirit or in the power of God .

The truth is that God desires that signs and wonders follow the life of the believer .

Without the power of God being demonstrated through the church then Christianity is reduced to just another form of empty religion.

We as believers are encouraged to covet earnestly  the best gifts and to pursue the more excellent way which is love ..

True Christianity is not just words, but is a demonstration of the Spirit with power .

And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

1 Corinthians 2:4-5
